What Is Hold?

The hold (also called vig or juice) is the margin built into both sides of a sportsbook market. A standard NFL spread of -110/-110 has implied probabilities of 52.4% / 52.4%, totaling 104.8%. The extra 4.8% is the sportsbook\'s edge; the price you pay for the option to wager.

Lower hold = better odds for the bettor. Ohio sportsbooks typically run 4-5% hold on standard markets and 5-10% on player props. Reduced-juice promos (-105 lines or +100) lower the hold to ~2.4%; meaningfully better long-term ROI.

Sharp bettors use this calculator to find no-vig fair odds, which serve as a proxy for the true probability of an outcome. A bet that beats no-vig fair odds is theoretically +EV.
